Although not from a winemaking family, in the few years since this Morgon native established his domaine, Karim Vionnet has become part of the elite of the small grower movement. His wines are now recognized as some of the finest in the appellation. Vionnet is located in the commune of Villié Morgon in the heart of Beaujolais. Until 2006 he worked with the legendary Guy Breton, who along with Marcel Lapierre and a few others unofficially launched the return to a simple, non-interventionist style of winemaking in Beaujolais a couple decades ago. Vionnet is also friends with Lapierre. One might say that he keeps company with the royalty of the region. Vionnet has plots of vines on the communes of Quincié and Lantignié in half-hills from which it produces Beaujolais-Villages, Beaujolais primeurs, Chirouble and Moulin-a-Vent. As a friend of the most credible winegrowers in the region, he cultivates the vines respecting the characteristics of the soil, without chemical treatment and plowing. Everything is done by hand. In the cellar his style is very minimalist, with traditional vinifications, often in concrete tank, without any use of yeast, sugar, SO2 and filtration. The resultant wines are pure expressions of gamay, full of bright fruit, minerality and depth of flavour. These are true terroir wines that embody the different vineyards from which they come and some are some of the purest Beaujolais out there.
