La Bioca

Piedmont (Langhe)

La Bioca is not your typical Langhe winery. Although their practices and quality are up there with many of the top producers in the region, they differ in that they are not a centuries old or even generations old winery. In fact, they are completely unique in the Langhe. La Bioca is the brainchild of Bisso Atanassov, a Bulgurian winemaker, who decided that he simply had to move to the Langhe and make wine there.

Since their inception, La Bioca has sought to acquire vineyard parcels all over the Langhe. Today they possess around 8 hectares of vineyards spread over Barolo crus such as "Castagni," "Bussia," "Ravera" and have also contracted winegrowers supplying top quality Nebbiolos from crus such as "Monvigliero" and "Borzone." In Barbaresco they have managed to grab one little corner of the field "Secondine," which is better known as "Sori San Lorenzo" - at least that's what Gaja puts on its label. And almost everything, from the humble 'entry-level' whites and reds to the illustrious crus, is micro-vinified, highlighting each individual commune or parcel from which the grapes were harvested.

Bisso’s light touch can be felt throughout. While he has a dizzying array of fermentation and maturation vessels, which include a clay amphora in which he ages one of his single-vineyard Nebbiolos, Bisso never interferes with the wines. He has an encyclopaedic understanding of each of his vineyard parcels and knows how to exact the full potential from each one, while allowing them to showcase their own natural beauty. Across the board the wines are stunning! They are elegant, expressive of their terroir and utterly delicious. Some serious things are happening at La Bioca and this is just the beginning. These guys are taking the wine world by storm and we are thrilled to be part of it. Oh, and we forgot to mention, the wines offer some of the most astounding value in the Langhe today. Do not miss out on these!
