Planted on poor soils, downslope from the vines destined for the Riserva in a southwest-facing parcel of the Perno hill. More forward than the Riserva, the Elio Sandri Barolo is intense, structured and age-worthy but extraordinarily balanced, thanks to careful aging in neutral Slovenian oak. It is native-yeast fermented with partial stem inclusion in barrels, racked back to same casks, then bottle aged four years before release. Unfined and unfiltered.
"The 2020 Barolo Perno is a very pretty, ethereal wine. Sweet dried cherry, crushed flowers, mint, spice and kirsch are all beautifully lifted. This understated Barolo nicely shows the more delicate side of the vintage. The 2020 is a bit slender and light in body, but conversely, it is a rare wine here that will be ready to drink with minimal cellaring. Drinking window: 2024-2034."
