Stanko believed strongly in the potential of the almost extinct grape variety Pignoli. In 1998, he planted the first parcel, 180 metres above sea level with steep gradients on marl soils, known locally as ‘Ponca’, with a valuable clay component. Saša was initially more skeptical, as Pignoli requires full phenolic ripeness in the vineyard, which means the grapes will be in the vineyard well into fall, leaving them at risk when the weather may be turning for the worse. However, he is now fully convinced of the distinct expressions of Pignoli: dark fruits with grip, but still fresh. This wine is great now, but can be easily laid down for another five years.
On the 2010 vintage:
"Woodsy and dark with an herbal tinge, the 2010 Pignolo opens in the glass. It's soft-textured with a pure mix of wild berry fruits and a bitter twang of sour citrus and spice. This finishes grippy and long with a citrusy concentration that lingers on as grippy tannins are left to tug at the palate. Drinking window 2023-2026."
